We Receive Presidential Citation

NYSSRA – Nordic’s President Jim Kobak recognized Shenendehowa Nordic Club with a Presidential Citation at the fall NYSSRA meeting in Utica September 27, 2009.  We are recognized because of our Club’s varied programs to foster Nordic ski sport in the southern Saratoga County area.

“I am proud of the enthusiasm all of our member families have for the sport and the effort that each family puts in through the ski season and throughout the year,” said Eric Hamilton, Club Secretary, upon receiving the award in behalf of the Club.  “I know of at least a half dozen other clubs across the state that seem just as effective,” added Hamilton.

In addition the Shenendehowa Nordic Club was provided a January 16, 2010 place on the NYSSRA calendar to host an Empire State Games and NYSSRA series cross country ski race.  In past years we have obtained a sanction and held this as a fund raiser at the Saratoga Biathlon Center about an hour away in the Saratoga County town of Day.

The club will be holding it’s first Bill Koch Youth Ski League practice on November 3 at Koda Middle School.  In addition we will have an open house later in November at High School East.  These will be the kick off events as the Shenendehowa Nordic Club starts into its thirtieth season as a local Nordic ski club.  For more information about the Club visit http://shenendehowanordic.homestead.com/Index.html or call the club phone at 383-8565.

Start The Season With The End In Mind

This is a great time to stop to consider what you want to accomplish on your cross country skis this season.  Read down the bullets of possibilities to the point where you say, “That’s not me.”  Then jump beyond the rest of the bullets to the following paragraph…

  • Have fun on snow by trying new games, different equipment, and different snow conditions.
  • Stay in shape during the winter months.
  • Try a fun race and see if I can win a ribbon.
  • (For our youth program…)  Attend and participate at the Mid Atlantic Bill Koch Festival in Lake Placid.
  • Complete an Empire State Games qualifier in cross country ski, biathlon or ski orienteering and earn a few points for the Shenendehowa Nordic Club.
  • Qualify for and compete in the Empires State Games in one or more Nordic ski sports.
  • Compete in the N Y State Ski Racing Association – Nordic Championships representing the Shenendehowa Nordic Club.

Now figure out how you can do which or how many of the bullets above that appealed to you.

The first step is to join the Shenendehowa Nordic Club.  Down load an application form, fill it out, and mail with a check for $20 to the address at the bottom of the form.  The $20 is for your whole family, everyone living in your house hold.  Now recognize that Nordic ski sports are individual sports just you against the elements or you against the clock, so there are not a lot of social commitments here.  On the other hand it is nice to see a familiar face or have someone out there to snag a wax bench for you when you need one.  Its also great to have a few people around that share your enthusiasm for the winter weather, share a few pointers, and someone to bum a ride from on occasion.  Join today.

The second step is to join the N Y State Ski Racing Association – Nordic (NYSSRA).  If your seasons goals go beyond the third bullet above join today.  It’s easy to do right on-line now.  Look for the link to “Join NYSSRA”.  You will receive links to all the rules and listings of competitive events this season and a whole host of possibilities for fun that I haven’t included here.  This membership can be your ticket to a whole new facet of winter enjoyment.

What ever you do this season, do it safely, stay warm, bring a friend, and have fun.
